what i am referencing is the closed dome like crowns that has usually red velvet showing through or the open crowns

It is highly symbolic. You are opening this up to many questions. Its not so much the close dome or open, partly that is design. Each jewel, velvet color, and shape has a meaning which varies by the country and culture. ie; blue could be loyalty, purple royalty, white purity, green honesty...etc. By wearing it they bear these virtues and qualities.
