Do crowns on back teeth need to have metal in them?

If I am getting a crown on a back tooth, does it need to be metal and porcelain or can it be either all procelain or ceramic and porcelain?

I would say you NEED porcelain on metal. These teeth take the brunt of chewing and I have had 2 crowns replaced because the porcelain on ceramic did not hold up very long.
Reply:docgobbler summed it up perfectly! You want gold...it is the best stuff out there...the only crown that I have in my mouth is gold...
Reply:You didn't specify your age but I would recommend that you discuss the alternatives with your doctor as he/she can best evaluate you for the type of crown. In my opinion, if the tooth is an upper and far enough back I'd go with an all gold crown [heck I'd even suggest it on a lower molar if the patient was willing!]. This is the standard for all other crowns and none are as good as this. Porcelain, no matter if the crown is all porcelain or porcelain fused to metal, can break. If the crowned tooth is going to chew against a natural tooth and you are young I'd be sure to have the chewing surface metal to prevent wear on the opposing tooth.
