What is the difference between crowns and veneers?

What is the difference between crowns and veneers?
A crown is used after you have a root canal (it's like a fake tooth covering for what's left of the tooth after the procedure. Think of a "crown" placed permanently over your smaller tooth. Veneers can be placed on one (or many) teeth in the front to make crooked teeth appear straight again for example. As far as cost goes, I'm assuming veneers cost more but I could be wrong.
