What kind of cement is used to glue on crowns and permanent retainers?

What is it made of, how does it work, and how long does this cement last to keep the restorations glued to your teeth? Is the cement usually so strong that a dentist must drill it off? I just want to be reassured that this cement is strong so I don't have to worry about my restorations coming loose.

If your asking about temporary crowns something like temp bond is used. If it's a permanent crown it varies depending on what type of permanent crowns. If its porcelain fused to Gold crown then something like Panavia w/c is very strong. If its some thing like all porcelain there are many kinds. Permanent cements usually last a very very long time unless the fitting is wrong or it wasn't bonded correctly then theres a small chance it could come out. Temporary cements hence the name do last a short time that's why u need to go back to your dentist 2 weeks after the preparation of the crown so you can get the permanent one.
Reply:I just had a crown chip and they had to saw it in half then break it off...so the cement is very strong it will not come loose.
