Is it safe to use over the counter whitening strips/gels, etc. on my porcelein crowns?

I'm not trying to "whiten" my crowns only the teeth around them. Will these whitening agents have a negative affect on my crowns?

Is it safe to use over the counter whitening strips/gels, etc. on my porcelein crowns?
it wont hurt them in any way but it will not whiten them i have a porclein tooth and my dentist told me it was fine to use the strips!!!

Hi i have posts in my front teeth I wanted to know how crowns would look on them and what is the best crown?

Additionly iI wanted to know how long they are expected to last and how would my teeth look after afew years when my gums recede?

Hi i have posts in my front teeth I wanted to know how crowns would look on them and what is the best crown?
As long as you have a decent dentist and lab technician to make the crowns, they should look great on your posts and teeth. If you take care of them and the rest of your teeth and visit the dentist and hygienist regularly, you shouldn't have enough gum recession to alter the appearance of your crowns. And again, taken care of properly and made well, they can last upwards of 20 years or so. Rough estimate, as it does vary from each individual. Good luck!

What are those neon light things the dentist uses when sealing the cement on your crowns?

It is called a curing light. It's just a concentration of light that can be directed in a small area. Some types of cement must be light cured in order for it to harden.

What are those neon light things the dentist uses when sealing the cement on your crowns?
I call them light curers but I'm not sure that's their proper name. They have an LED which shines a high intensity 470 nm light at the cement. This causes a chain reaction in the cement chemically altering it thereby causing it to set.
Reply:I think it's to help seal the cement or something but I do know that if the dentist and the assistant get to wear the UV glasses, than shouldn't I be hooked up with a pair?
Reply:Black guinea pig is the stupid one ! And no insults please from the ignorant 'cos it is intense UV. (ultra violet light) to set the cement rapidly.
Reply:UV light to set the cement.

Can you grow parsnips or salsify from crowns?

If I slice the crown off of parsnips and/or salsify and replant the crown, will they continue to grow and produce a new root (or at least leaf out and go to seed?)

Can you grow parsnips or salsify from crowns?
I am gonna say no, with reservation that is....

I would like you to try putting it in water and see if you can get it to root that way.

Please let me know!

How easily do temporary crowns break?

how easily do permanent crowns break?

How easily do temporary crowns break?
Permanent crowns donot break but the temporary crowns can break if you bite something hard and wear them for longer duration ie 3 weeks or more. For more on crowns you can read the following... http://www.identalhub.com/ArticleSubCate...
Reply:Temporary crowns can last a fairly long time, if you are not biting hard on them. Permanent are much better and last for years and years, while a temporary at best can go a year. That's not saying that they can't break or have something happen, but barring unforeseen circumstances, permanent can be a lifetime, while temporary can be a month or two to a year or two.
Reply:not very easily
Reply:just don't eat hard stuff.

Will porcelain crowns be a permanent solution for Diastema. If grinding of the teeth affect the root's streng

Dentists say it will be a permanent solution and the crown will not come out. Is it true.

Will porcelain crowns be a permanent solution for Diastema. If grinding of the teeth affect the root's streng
no! i dont' know when and where that dentist did his training!!!

to close diastema , you don't shave the tooth to tiny peg and put a crown there!!!!!!

veneer is used for that , since diastema is considered a cosmetic defect!!!!! why in the world someone suggest or even consider destroying your tooth and putting a crown there just to close a gap!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and crown is never permanent! if the same dentist that made such stupid treatment option for you, does your crown procedure , i'm sure his crown is gonna be as crazy as his treatment plan and will fail 100% because of poor techniq!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Please change your dentist, !!! i'm very distrubed but what i just read!!!
Reply:Please do not think that any dental work is permanent. Nothing lasts forever, especially inside the mouth where it is subject to constant bacterial attack and huge biting forces.

There are 4 ways to close a gap between teeth.

1)Braces --costly, take time and not esthetically pleasing. However does not require reduction of the teeth.

2)White fillings --look great at first, but in a few months will start to see the line where the filling meets the tooth. Over time the material does darken, and is very prone to breaking off.

3)Veneers -- best solution if the space is not too large (say less than 2mm) since they require the least amount of tooth reduction.

They can break and or come off completely.

4)Crown -- necessary if the space is greater than 2 mm. Also have been known to break, but rarely come off completely. Require much more reduction of the tooth all the way around the tooth.

I hope this brief description of your options helps. Good luck in whatever you decide.
Reply:Yes, porcelain crowns is a solution for a diastema, but is considered cosmetic and not necessary, so it won't be covered by insurance...and besides, why 'ruin' two good teeth just so the space is closed? The crown(s) could come out, but not likely if they're done right.

Why not opt for braces instead? Get a consultation appointment with an orthodontist and see what he says.. there's nothing wrong with getting a second opinion...

An occlusal guard (nightguard) will help with the grinding..

What is the difference between porcelain crowns & veneers?

which is better? cheaper?

What is the difference between porcelain crowns %26amp; veneers?
A veneer is limited to the lip surface of a tooth. It requires a little reduction of this surface (.5-1mm) so that it can be replaced by a thin sliver of porcelain that will change the shape or color of the underlying tooth.

A porcelain crown goes all the way around the tooth. This means that the whole tooth needs to be reduced about 1.5mm all the way around. So you end up losing a lot more tooth structure with a crown prep.

A veneer would be a little bit cheaper than a full crown, but not by much.

Because a veneer preparation requires less tooth destruction, I would consider it to be better. Both can have accidents. Porcelain can fracture for both crowns and veneers. Veneers can also just debond and pop off. If you can do the job with veneers then veneers are better. If you need a crown to provide strengthen the tooth, or to fill a large gap, then the crown is obviously better.

Can crowns be removed after they are glued on?

I may be getting a gold crown glued on my back molar this Friday. If I change my mind later on that I want it replaced with a porcelain crown will they be able to remove the gold crown once it's glued on without damaging my molar? Or is the glue so strong that a crown can never be removed once it is glued on?

Can crowns be removed after they are glued on?
The crown would have to be cut off but it shouldn't damage the underlying tooth structure, though it may have to be re prepared, depending on the time frame in which you change your mind, which means they will have to cut the tooth back a little more. For your own best interests maybe you should decide which crown you really want so as to save yourself time and money.
Reply:of course...
Reply:Actually there are two types of (glue) in dentistry we called it cement either temporary or permenant. If the temporary one is used it will be easy to remove the crown but if the permenant one is used it will be really difficult to remove it because it can cause tooth brakage or if the dentist want to safe the tooth from any damage he will just cut the old crown which will be of no use.

it's your decision!!!!!!

if you are concerned with esthetic i advise you to ask for the porcelain crown ,yes it's more expensive but it worth it and as i know no one is using gold crowns any more here in my country!!!!!
Reply:It is no problem to remove a crown. The doctor will either tap it off or remove it with the bur of a handpiece (the drill). He will numb you first not because it hurts per say, but because once the underlying tooth is exposed, it may be sensitive. He will remove it quite easily and you probably won't even know the moment it comes off. No worries.
Reply:If you want to test-drive your crown, ask to have it placed with a soft temporary cement. Removing a crown that has been permanently cemented ALWAYS creates some risk of damaging the tooth, as in breaking it off right at the gumline. You do NOT want to take that risk. Even removing it if a temp cement has been used might not be easy, but at least there is less risk of breaking your tooth off.

You can have the crown placed on the tooth with no cement and take a look in the mirror before the dentist proceeds with any cementation. You might be able to decide right then and there about whether or not you will be satisfied with a gold crown.

See my other answer about some reasons that gold may have been used in the first place.
Reply:I HAVE ALREADY RESPONDED TO YOU REGARDING THIS ISSUE. GOLD IS REALLY THE BEST CHOICE.

ps.you would also pay for another crown too
Reply:why not?
Reply:I'm pretty sure they can take it off, yes. Because my dentist is going to have to take my crown off because it doesn't fit right, and they are going to have to fix it.
Reply:Your molar is already damaged or you wouldn't need a crown. Yes, you can get a different one later. It hurts to take the old one %26amp; glue off, so make them numb you up. My a** of a dentist didn't %26amp; I nearly smacked him.
Reply:Yes, the dentist can cut it off. But why gold???????????????

Porcelain is more esthetic!!!

Is it normal for teeth with crowns to be "itchy" two days after the procedure?

A couple days ago I got a few crowns and a bridge put in. For some reason those teeth are kind of, for lack of a better word, "itchy." They're not painful, mind you, just uncomfortable. Is this normal and will the itchiness subside or should I follow up with my dentist?

Is it normal for teeth with crowns to be "itchy" two days after the procedure?
Yes, it is normal. The topical anesthetic and the injections for numbing wear off. The result is itching for a few days ;). Nothing to worry about.

Is the only way to cover acid wear with veneers or crowns?

NO!! If you've worn tooth structure away with acid exposure (chewing vitamin C, GURD, bulemia, etc), then it's best to save as much remaining tooth structure as possible. Crowns and veneers take away the remaining enamel. Consider bonding over the area to protect the remaining enamel. Find a dentist that is skilled with composite resin procedures.

Is the only way to cover acid wear with veneers or crowns?
Helen is correct.....and bonding is good to preserve the tooth, but you need to control the acid exposure (GERD, Bulimia, etc.) to prevent further problems.......

Another help to build enamel is MI paste.

Is it normal for new crowns to have sensitivity, especially between the teeth when flossing.?

The crowns have been in for more than 2 months

Is it normal for new crowns to have sensitivity, especially between the teeth when flossing.?
NORMALLY IT'S NOT A PROBLEM. THE CONTACT BETWEEN THE TWO CROWNS MIGHT BE TIGHT. USE GLIDE FLOSS IN BETWEEN THEM, AND FLOSS GENTLY W/O SNAPPING IN THE FLOSS.
Reply:No, you need to go back to the dentist. The sensitivity should have been gone months ago. That may not have removed all the nerves from the tooth. My an appointment with your dentist today. Good luck
Reply:If you just have a crown over a live tooth then when you floss your hitting the live tooth...

so yes, at times it can be sensitive...

Can permanent crowns get be whitened if they were already tinted?

When I was 12 I broke my two front teeth. I am a smoker, so when I was old enough to get my permanent crowns, my teeth weren't exactly white. They tinted the crowns to match the other teeth, but now I want to bleach my teeth. If I do this are they going to end up staying the same color while the others go white, or will they turn white too?

Can permanent crowns get be whitened if they were already tinted?
No.
Reply:I just last week checked with my dentist. The answer is NO. They will have to be replaced and that will not be inexpensive.
Reply:If you bleach your teeth your crowns will stay the same color they are now. Crowns are made out of porcelain and they are made to match the color of your teeth, once that color always that color the only way to change that is to have the crowns replaced.
Reply:Yes, you will have to replace them. I wouldn't be surprised if they find reccurent decay under the old crowns too.

Hope you are considering quiting smoking.

good luck.
Reply:Your crowns won't bleach, but your teeth will. So, if you don't want to end up with a "corn on the cub" smile, avoid bleaching!

But anyway, if you're a smoker, bleaching is not for you! It's a formal contraindication to bleaching treatment. If you want to bleach your teeth, you must:

1- Stop smoking.

2- Stop smoking.

3- Get a dental appointment. Bleaching is often a step that follows dental work with higher priority, like treating cavities and gum diseases.

4- Be ready to need a crown replacement.

5- Avoid squandering aimlessly on OTC stuff without dental supervision.

6- Stop smoking.

This is a footpath to success!

I had 6 crowns on the front one of them had a hairline cracked. Must I replaced all of them?

Can it be repaired? Or I had to replace the new crown.

If you have six crowns then you would only replace the damaged one. If you have a bridge that is replacing six teeth then you will probably have to replace the whole bridge.

Why do crowns for teeth cost so much?

They are just little pieces of porcelin.

Why do crowns for teeth cost so much?
I am glad to answer that for you. They are not just little pieces of porcelain first off. And no they have not proven the metal crowns to be unsafe like the first person said. Depending on the lab that the dentist uses is what the cost of the crown will be. Also what type of material he has the lab use. Non-precious metal crowns are known not to last near as long as high nobel metal (a gold mixture). So many dentists are choosing that type, simply because their name is going on that work and they don't want their name on something that is going to fail in about 7 years. Making a crown start to finish is not cheap.

When you pay for a crown you are paying for every singe item they use on you. Guaze, cotton rolls, anesthetic, needle, sterilization of the insturments, barriers for the room, water, electricity, the burs that are used to prepare the tooth, impression material, impression tray, hemostatic solution and cord, temporary crown material, cement, lab fees, assistant salary (I make $15.00 and hour, some assistants make as much as $22.00 and hour) the paper your insurance claim or bill was printed on, the front desks salary, blah blah blah. Need I go on, cause trust me there is a lot more on the list.

I say a lab bill the other day on a crown. We asked for a high nobel crown with a porcelain outer cover. With the cost of the weight of the gold, the porcelain, shipping, tax, etc., the bill for that one crown was $318.00. We charged the patient $825.00 for that. So take the lab fee out of that and you have $507.00 left over, which will have all the above things listed deducted before the dentist pockets a dime.

So now do you see why those "Little pieces of porcelain" cost so much.

Trust me, I know how expensive dental materials. I buy them everyday. They are outragous. Not like going to WalMart.
Reply:I agree completely, that is alot of money. But those dang dental supply companies charge a butt load for the supplies we buy. I have probably bought about $7,000 worth of supplies in the last 3 weeks. Guess who in the end pays for that? The patients. Report Abuse

Reply:Because dentist can charge what they want and they do. It costs a local lab $110 to make a crown, thats what they charge the dentist and he turns around and charges $900. At most I would say the dentist spends one and a half hours with the patient, thats doing the crown prep and then cementing the permanant crown weeks later. The dental assistant does most of the work and makes anywhere from $10-16 an hour.

Now, you would think that they would want to encourage people to visit the dentist, but anyway, its a dog eat dog world.

My advice to you and your husband is if you get check ups and cleanings regularly (every 6 months) you can avoid having painful and or very expensive work done because you will 99% of the time catch these problems when they are small.

Thats the truth and thats my advice to you.
Reply:So the dentist can afford his expensive car, house, take a world cruise you know...rob us blind!
Reply:Go to Mexico and get the work done for a tenth of the price (don't worry - they're trained in the U.S.)
Reply:What do you do for a living?

I had a service call to "clean my pipes" when our sewer line was sluggish. The gentleman was here for FIFTEEN MINUTES. I mean, from the time he rang the doorbell until the time he slammed his van door on his way out of the drive was FIFTEEN MINUTES. He took one cap off a pipe and did the plumber's equivalent of opening up a tooth for root canal with a 3 foot snake. That was all it took. He charged $169.00 for this, which was his minimum charge for a service call. Let's say that was all he could make in an hour, because he has to drive from one location to the next. This money is HIS money, as he answers his own phone and handles all of his own business. He has no salaries to pay. As far as I can see it, he had to pay for gas to get to my house and that was his only variable expense involved in the call. His fixed expenses are for his equipment. In my case, he used a snake that is exactly like one I saw at Home Depot for thirty bucks. Depreciate that over a 7 year period....... Nevermind. You understand what I'm saying.

Personally, after 8 years of higher education, I'd like to have a net income close to what the man who opened up my sewer pipe makes per hour.
Reply:it takes a long time to become a dentist. they charge alot because they can. if a mechanic had to go to 8 years of school, a tune up would probably cost a couple grand...
Reply:Not only are you paying for the crown itself, but also for the dental assistant's time working on you, the dentist themselves time, all the materials they use in getting the crown ready and many, many other things.
Reply:They are hand crafted. They take a while to do. I know someone who does this for a living.
Reply:The composite resin crowns are not covered by dental insurance, which is quite unfair, and very costly. However, the metal ones have been proven to be unsafe.
Reply:every area will charge you differently....they cost so much because of 1 the type you buy and or where you go. Full porcelain meaning no metal will cost more..and buy the way...yes the INS should help you with 50% of a crown the has metal. And metal is safe. A composite resin is a white filling not a crown...

Why do mexicans like to put gold crowns on their front teeth?

is it rude to ask?

i am trying to be carefull... i dont want to upset anyone!

Why do mexicans like to put gold crowns on their front teeth?
Its common throughout central and south america, not just mexico. Actually, its more common outside of mexico, are you sure the people you saw were mexicans?
Reply:Mexicans?!?!?!?! Dude, you are confuse, is Blacks who like to crown their teeths with gold and platinum, Blacks!
Reply:My dentist answered this question for me a few years ago. When Mexicans go home, they are proud to show their family still living in Mexico how well they have done in the United States. And, since many Mexicans living in Mexico cannot afford dental work, it is a sign of prosperity to have golden crowns. That shows everyone that you have done so well that you can even afford expensive American dental work. It is a source of pride and admiration for the Mexican.
Reply:Latin America was historically gold rich. I am sure that the gold capping began with indigenous dentistry (with the curanderos.) The Aztecs were very skilled in metal work...as were the Mayans. I've seen this trend with more than Mexicans...it's all over the world, mostly in tribal or indigenous societies. When you get out in the world, these "things" are really nothing special. Most Europeans can identify US Americans by their straight bleached teeth. Preferences are preferences...
Reply:i thought that was a black rap thang
Reply:ACTUALLY...

That is done because in Mexico, it's cheaper if you need to get a tooth fixed. Since american dentists have evolved quite a bit, we have the choice of having silver fillings to clear or natural tooth colored fillings. A lot of them got this done years ago, so back then all they had was a choice of silver or gold fillings.

People are so ignorant.

Does having crowns affect wearing braces in any way?

I'm about to get my braces and i was wondering if crowns have any effect on that

Does having crowns affect wearing braces in any way?
No. Braces move the whole tooth, including the root. The crown is cemented on the tooth so well, that it won't come off or break. It will work the same as any other tooth. The root in the bone is what is being shifted, not just the top of the tooth where the crowns sit.

Thats what novacaine is for. But there are a number of people that do it without! It looks scary than it is. I would get the novacaine if it were me.
Reply:It isn't any more painful than a filling. You may be sore for a few days just from being open so long. Depending on if they have to remove any extra gum tissue is another thing to consider. I know the prepped teeth look scary, but it's really not a big deal. =)

What is the cost of tooth bonding & crowns?

I am interested in getting tooth bonding, or crowns because i think it is cheaper that veneers, does anyone know the price of having these procedures done?

What is the cost of tooth bonding %26amp; crowns?
Crowns are expensive but much more permanent. However, they require a lot of preparation work so I don't recommend getting them unless absolutely necessary. If your teeth are perfectly healthy but discolored or misshapen, you would do better with bonding.
Reply:Crowns are expensive ... $800+

How long (hours, miniutes) will it take to get 2 crowns done?

Other then the two days it takes.

How long (hours, miniutes) will it take to get 2 crowns done?
It takes 2 different visits. The first one will be longer (an hour, more or less) because that's the one where they prepare your teeth, make the measurements for the crowns, and fit you with temporaries.

In between visits, of course, you have the wait time while the permanent crowns are made.

The visit where you get the permanent crowns put in will be a lot shorter, half an hour or so. I was surprised how fast mine went!

Note that I'm talking how much time you're actually in the chair, not adding in the other time for filling out paperwork.
Reply:Once you get the molds done, and you go back in to get the permanent crowns put on, it only takes about an hour. It's very easy and pain free. :)
Reply:Depends on your dentist. My dentist doesn't have the facility or the knowledge how to cast crowns so he has to send the molds of my teeth to place else. First, he drills out the decay in the tooth and puts something on the surfaces to make sure more decay starts up and the exposed areas don't get infected. Then he takes molds of the tooth. This all usually takes an hour and is done under local anaesthetic (a shot into the gums to numb). He sends the crowns out to get cast and puts a temporary crown on my tooth. In about a week when the cast crowns come back, he takes off the temporary, checks to make sure the excavation is still clean and all, he dries the whole area, tests the crown to make sure it fits (and if it's got a porcelain front, the color matches my own teeth color). If all is good, he applies glue (cement, caulking, whatever it is) and puts the crown on. I have to bite down for a minute or so until the glue sets. Then he or his assistant drill away the excess glue, make sure the crown itself doesn't have any sharp edges, makes sure the crown fits into the teeth above or below (tight bite). When all is good, I get to leave (takes about an hour). How long all this will take your dentist depends on how much drilling he has to do to clean out the tooth decay and how your dentist likes to work.
Reply:It depends on the size of the tooth that needs the crown and where they are in the mouth. Front teeth are much faster to prep for the crown because they are smaller. If you have the 2 teeth that need crowns right next to each other it's faster because they are right next to each other. But typically it should take around 2hrs from start to finish. Then back in 2-3 wks for the permanat crown.
Reply:Once the permanent crown is made it will probably only take an hour - 90 minutes to seat two crowns...unless there's a complication. If you've already had the impressions mad and you currently have temporary crowns on, the hard part is over. (That is, until you have to pay the bil!!!)
Reply:I don't know. I got three fillings done and it took about an hour. It depends on how badly your teeth need preparation for the crown and how quickly your dentist and their assistants can work.
Reply:Every dentist does prep work differently - some are very fast, taking maybe 30 to 40 mins after the tooth is numb, others taking an hour or more. It's all in the technique and experience.

Some dentists offer "same day" crowns because they have a machine that actually mills the crown out of a single ceramic block. The brand name most used is CEREC, and the equipment is very costly so not many dentists invest in them. However, it saves both the time and expense of sending an impression to an outside lab.

If the two teeth are next to each other, it will take less time than if the crowns are in different parts of the mouth. (Less numbing time.)

When you make your appointment, ask the scheduler how long you should allow for your visit.

What are those leaf crowns that the romans wore called?

I am making a poster for a toga party and need a picture of that crown of leaves but I don't know which word to search for. Anyone has any ideas?

What are those leaf crowns that the romans wore called?
Laurel wreath

A laurel wreath is a circular wreath made of interlocking branches and leaves of the Bay Laurel (Laurus nobilis, Lauraceae), an aromatic deciduous evergreen.

In Greek mythology, Apollo is represented wearing a laurel wreath on his head. In ancient Greece wreaths were awarded to victors, both in athletic competitions, including the ancient Olympics, and in poetic meets.

In Rome they were symbols of military victory, crowning a successful commander during his triumph.

Whereas ancient laurel wreaths are most often depicted as a horseshoe shape, modern versions are usually complete rings.

Need more information about porcelain crowns?

Thank you for answering me with information about crowns earlier. I lost a lot of teeth structure on my front. Lots of enamel are lost. But I checked out the internet about crowns and it seems the picture for those people who use crowns have more teeth than what I've.

Maybe I'm wrong. Is there like percentage of tooth and crown together in order for it to be strong?

Is there any other option? I heard from a friend that porcelain veneer is not strong if u don't have much teeth.. I guess porcelain crown is the same since they use the same material?

I schedule an appointment next week but I want to get some info so I know what to expect from dentist or see if he's rite. What do u think I can do?

Thanks.

Need more information about porcelain crowns?
Don't worry about not having enough tooth structure for successful crown placement, your dentist will decide that. If you're lacking in the tooth structure department he can always do what's called a "build-up" where he actually adds tooth colored filling material to the existing tooth to make it able to hold a crown. The main consideration is that your tooth is not loose in the gum tissue. That kind of problem requires a different solution, but good results can still be achieved.

There is a difference between a crown and a porcelain veneer. A crown is usually either all metal (like a gold or a mixture of metals), part metal with a porcelain overlay, or all porcelain. They all have their own particular strengths and weaknesses which your dentist will go into more detail about.

A veneer is always made of just porcelain. It is less durable than a full coverage crown because there is no metal involved, but they are usually more aesthetically pleasing (they look better), for the same reason (no dark metal shows through the porcelain).

Your dentist will recommend what he/she feels is the best option for your particular case.
Reply:The short answer, since Kat's answer covers it pretty well...

If your tooth is in good shape, a veneer would leave the tooth stronger than if you had a crown done. If your tooth is in bad shape, a veneer will not do much to strengthen the tooth, but a crown would.

What is the difference between crowns and veneers?

Veneers fit onto anterior teeth (front) mostly on incisors. Crowns cover the entire tooth, especially after a rct (root canal). When you think of veneers, just think about acrylic tips on nails, they just cover the one surface and are mainly for esthetic purposes. Crowns are actually placed to serve a functional purpose; most of the materials they use are strong enough to withstand the forces of mastication (chewing). Veneers are also strong, but may come off if there is too much stress placed on then, mostly from compressional forces. Hope this helps!!

What is the difference between crowns and veneers?
Crowns go around the whole tooth and veneers covers only the front surface. However, many of the veneers done these days do aggressive tooth reduction for strength(of the veneer) and appearance. Oftentimes so much tooth is removed in either case that it significantly lowers the strength of the tooth. If the tooth flexes, it'll pop off a crown or a veneer.
Reply:I think crowns are on your molars. And veneers are on your other teeth.

Where can i get cheaper porcelain crowns?

i currently have silver crowns but they look like crap when i smilei only have two one on the upper right side and one one the lower side but you can tell when i smile it doesnt look ladylike .

Where can i get cheaper porcelain crowns?
The only place I can think of for cheaper porcelain crowns would be at any UC. UCSF, UOP, etc.

Cheap materials is not the way to go if you want them to last long.

Dental schools use ok materials. but the "dentists" are dental students.

Good Luck!!
Reply:If you live near a dental school (university) they may give you a cheaper rate. I do not know where you live, but I do know if there is one near you. I went to the University of Iowa. I do not know where the closest one to you will be.

If the cost of treatment is a major concern, then i would suggest you explore the option of travelling to another country for your dentalwork.

Whilst it isnt financially feasable for everyone, the fact you can save over 90% on prices in the US and UK makes it very attractive to many.

Of course you need to do your due dilligence and make sure the dentist you decide on has both the expertise and most importantly recommendations you can check.

I have done this myself a few months ago. After extensive research i went to a delightful and highly recommended lady dentist in Mexico, and 28 top quality porcelain crowns cost me $2400/£1200. I saved myself over $33,000 on what i'd been quoted here, which is mor than 92% less.

As i say , this isnt for everyone, but if you are thinking of spending a considerable sum of money, it is an option you should perhaps at least consider..:-)

I have to get four crowns for my upper teeth. Will it look good?

Apparently, I have a lot of cavities. Damn you tobacco...I've quit btw. My dentist said in order for me to make the teeth look good, that I'm going to have to have crown work done and that my insurance will cover it. I've never really had good teeth, so this seems like something that could boost my confidence. I have a gap between my front 2 teeth. Will it close most of it?

I have to get four crowns for my upper teeth. Will it look good?
Assuming you are consulting with an honest, skilled dentist... then crowns are a very good way to rebuild damaged teeth and have them look good at the same time. Closing the gap is very easily done.

Be aware that dental insurance is only a help to the total expense. You will still have a major amount to pay, and may want to look at getting a personal loan.

But, I'm also concerned about your back teeth. They must have any decay repaired too.

Beside the fact that you quit the tobacco, Congratulations! You must stop any habits with soda or other sweet drinks! They are the main reason for rotten teeth today!
Reply:The crowns will look absolutely natural and blend in with the color of your teeth. The dentist will offer you an option between crowns that are natural colored or the metal kind that used to be so common (I think they're called amalgam). Make sure you choose the former! They are a little more expensive but well worth it. They will unfortunately not close the gap in your front teeth, you will need to have a different procedure for that like braces.
Reply:insurance never covers the entire amount. they will look like regular teeth. check with your insurance about the cost. most will cover a percentage. you might need a spacer for the gap. or veneers.

I had two dental crowns put on yesterday?

They are the temp ones until the perm ones are made. I'm getting a bad taste in my mouth from them. Is this normal?

I had two dental crowns put on yesterday?
yes, this bad taste is typically food getting trapped around them and not being cleaned out. sometimes, if the teeth that are getting crowns are next to eachother, the dentist will have the 2 temps stuck together as opposed to having 2 singles. i would recommend flossing and using a mouth rinse in the area. your dentist will thank you for healthy tissues!!
Reply:are you flossing aroung them...you need to.

i have a temp crown on and it catches food a lot.

the dental hygenist told me to keep the area flossed well.

they kind of cut the gums so there is some blood.

that could be the taste.

I had mine Tue and it's fine now.
Reply:um.. what are dental crowns?
Reply:Yes this is normal. I've had two of them put in as well. They taste kinda funny, you're just not used to them. It goes away in a bit. You may/or may not get it when you have the real ones in, but it also doesn't take long. I'd advice you to have Tylenol ready...I had quite the sensitive pain when the real crowns got in! It will only last for a day or two though.

All the best
Reply:yes ,find a good rinse formular to get rid of the taste

Can porcelain veneers and crowns be shortened once they are already cemented in place in my mouth?

Absolutely they can be shortened! In most cases it is only by microns not inches so the minimal amount should not affect or compromise the strength, margins or aesthetics of the crowns or veneers. If the dentist feels he has removed a significant amount he can send crowns back to be reglazed, veneers would have to be shortened after they are cemented and a rubber wheel can buff them up very nicely as well.

Can porcelain veneers and crowns be shortened once they are already cemented in place in my mouth?
They can be shortened by grinding them down but it is not recommended as they will just not look as nice/shiny. The dentist should have given you a mirror to look at them before he cemented them in place.

Will having crowns on my front teeth prevent me from playing the harmonica?

NO IT WON 'T THE FRONT TEETH DO NOT CONTACT THE HARNONICA WHEN PLAYING IT.

What does it mean when the harmonica player is drooling from both sides of his mouth?

Answer: The stage is level!
Reply:I do not play the harmonica, but I do have front crowns. Aside from being a little cautious about biting hard things with them, they are the same as your own.

I broke one of my first two. I think the back was made too thin.

They are expensive so you will learn to be careful with them.
Reply:Didn't stop me...
Reply:No they wont get in your way of playing the harmonica.

You could try and use it to your advantage. The harmonica might double as an antenna and you might be able to get your local radio station in your head lol just kidding

As crowns and bridges are not covered by Dental insurance, is there a guide line for the cost range?

so the patient will have an idea about reasonable or unreasonable charge?

As crowns and bridges are not covered by Dental insurance, is there a guide line for the cost range?
HELLO,

if you have dental insurance then crowns and bridges are called major benefits that are covered under 50% of the dentist's price.

The reasonable and usual fees vary from region to region, but your insurance co. knows these fees, so call them or your dentist.
Reply:Most dental insurances cover crowns and bridges, varying in percentage as per your subscription. The cost can be calculated at $800-1200 per crown basis for ceramic ones. PFM crowns/bridges are much cheaper. Other than that you can also look for dental care overseas where prices are very cheap. Crowns and bridges in India or elsewhere can also be searched.
Reply:You can usually get an estimate from a dentist. It is a shame that these things aren't covered by insurance. Many people have hereditary problems and simply can't afford to get their teeth fixed so they end up getting them pulled making matters worse in the long run.

it takes a long time to lead up to any major events in life even though the visible result may seem to happen quickly to other people.
Reply:about the same as the saying: the straw that broke the camel's back.

It's not the last straw, it's that everything else which was packed on its back brought it so close to the breaking point so the event which does break it can be minor as it is just the last in a long chain of events.

My dentist wants me to get crowns for my front teeth?

Do they look natural ?

Do they feel like real teeth?

My dentist wants me to get crowns for my front teeth?
If you can avoid crowns, that's healthier for the teeth. While the porcelains look lovely, the dentist has to grind down a substantial amount of tooth structure to make it look good. This usually leads to a rot canal at some point and, given enough years, you lose the tooth/teeth.
Reply:Yes they look natural. Two types of ceramic crowns given. ONe is metal fused to ceramic and other one is ful ceramic. The full ceramic looks like 100% natural and asesthetics look natural as compared to metal fused to ceramic which are normally given for back teeth. For more on crowns you can read the following informative article on dental website... http://www.identalhub.com/ArticleSubCate...
Reply:Yes they look natural, they feel like your real teeth. I had to get crowns due to an accident which broke off both front teeth about 20 years ago. Do not hesitate to get crowns as it improves your looks and you have allot more poise and self confidence.
Reply:I am living proof. Most dentisst match the color of the crown to the other front teeth. But they do have a smoother surface compared to natural teeth.
Reply:If your dentist is good and he uses good materials it will look natural. Here are the things you need to check: http://the-dental-makeover.com/different...

Why do most dentists take credit for crowns and other?

cosmedic procedures. A dental tecnician is the one that makes the restoration. Most patients don't seem to know that. So to you dentist out there I would like to know.

Why do most dentists take credit for crowns and other?
i give mad props to my lab tech. he's the artist.

i take the cedit because i'm smarter, more talented, more educated, work harder, stress over your pain, took the financial risk just to put up with your a$$, and most importantly, have the resposiblity not to make a mistake that ends in your death.
Reply:Tom you are the biggest dumba@s! For such a educated man you sure are a s_hitty speller! Report Abuse

Reply:Hmmmm, so when a mechanic fixes your car you thank the company that made the parts????
Reply:The tech makes the restoration on the prescription of the dentist. Without the licensed dentist to prepare the tooth and insert the restoration, the technician would have no job in the first place. It's up to ME to tell the tech exactly what I want and then I hope they interpret it the way I meant it.

Having said that, I give the technician all due credit when things are right. They share the blame when things are wrong, too. When the patient asks why they have to wait 3 weeks for their new crown, I tell them that it has to be sent to the lab to be made just for them.

Can I get heavy metal poisoning from gold crowns?

How serious of a concern is this? I have 7 crowns and a bridge.

Can I get heavy metal poisoning from gold crowns?
Gold is very nonreactive. It will not dissolve once in your mouth (unlike the mercury compounds used in other dental work). If it does not dissolve, it cannot poison you.
Reply:No
Reply:No.

In fact, I have two friends who have mild cases of MS (Multiple Sclerosis). They both had their regular fillings removed and had them replaced with gold fillings, because gold is supposed to have some beneficial effect for people with this type of condition.
Reply:NO! here...

Definition

Heavy metal poisoning is the toxic accumulation of heavy metals in the soft tissues of the body.

Description

Heavy metals are chemical elements that have a specific gravity (a measure of density) at least five times that of water. The heavy metals most often implicated in human poisoning are lead, mercury, arsenic, and cadmium. Some heavy metals, such as zinc, copper, chromium, iron, and manganese, are required by the body in small amounts, but these same elements can be toxic in larger quantities.

Heavy metals may enter the body in food, water, or air, or by absorption through the skin. Once in the body, they compete with and displace essential minerals such as zinc, copper, magnesium, and calcium, and interfere with organ system function. People may come in contact with heavy metals in industrial work, pharmaceutical manufacturing, and agriculture. Children may be poisoned as a result of playing in contaminated soil.

Causes and symptoms

Symptoms will vary, depending on the nature and the quantity of the heavy metal ingested. Patients may complain of nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, headache, sweating, and a metallic taste in the mouth. Depending on the metal, there may be blue-black lines in the gum tissues. In severe cases, patients exhibit obvious impairment of cognitive, motor, and language skills. The expression "mad as a hatter" comes from the mercury poisoning prevalent in 17th century France among hatmakers who soaked animal hides in a solution of mercuric nitrate to soften the hair.

Does it hurt to have temporary crowns removed?

A few months ago my two front teeth got badly chipped in an accident at work and FINALLY tomorrow is the day I'm getting the permanent crowns put on (along with veneers on 4 other teeth). Anyway, I've never had any trouble with my temporary crowns, never any pain or discomfort and my nerves weren't exposed when the teeth were chipped in the first place. I'm just getting a little bit nervous about what I should prepare myself to face tomorrow morning (besides sitting in that chair for a lonnnnng time, lol). I'm not worried about the veneers at all, it's just the removal of the temporary crowns that really makes me a little nervous. So if anyone has any advice or warning for me just so I know what to expect... that would be super.

Does it hurt to have temporary crowns removed?
I'm a dental assistant, and in the office I work, the dentist will give anesthetic to remove a temporary crown (unless the tooth has a root canal). The process of removing the crown shouldn't hurt because i expect they used temporary cement, which usually comes off easily. However, the teeth can be very sensitive to cold water or the gums can be irritated a little bit and they can be sensitive to clean all the cement off... so in that case, the dentist may administer anesthetic for your comfort. Good luck with your dental work, I hope you like your new smile!
Reply:temp crowns are placed w/temp cement, so they come off very easy. you'll just feel a little force/pressure as they are wiggled off, but no pain will be felt at all. you'll think your tooth is being yanked out, but it's nothing but a little tug to get out the temporary, it takes a lot more force to actually pull a tooth out-so just relax and open wide! hope you enjoy your veneers:)
Reply:Removing the temorary crowns is the easyest part of all. They will be out before you know it.I have done it for years and nobody ever said that i hurt them.If you are very nervous, ask them to numb you before they do it.Good luck.
Reply:Not painful. I've had it done 3 times. You feel a pulling sensation, but your tooth isn't going to come out, just the temp. It wasn't anywhere close to the big deal I thought it would be. Tell the dentist you're a little nervous about it so he can be as gentle as possible.
Reply:No it will not hurt I had 3 temp did not feel anthing. Good luck

with ur need teeth.
Reply:I can't recall anything particular special about having a temporary crown removed, and I've spent about half my life (OK, that's a slight exaggeration) in the dentist's chair.

Since it's temporary, they don't use as strong a cement as for a permanent crown.
Reply:Not at all. The dentist will just use his long tweezers and pry it off suprisingly easy. It will just be a bit sensitive. I have had this done twice.
Reply:No, not painful at all. U do feel them taking it out like u'll feel ur teeth is uncovered but no pain whatsoever. U might feel an "empty" spot when they remove it and replace it w/the permanent ones if u touch it w/ur tongue. But nope, the most non-painful thing at the dentist. I have two. And gladly this procedure than anything else. Lol.

Tooth veneers or crowns for my teeth?

I have some slightly crooked teeth on my lower jaw in front, what is my best option here, veneers or crowns? Also I want something that will look good and be very effective while cost friendly. Any ideas?

Tooth veneers or crowns for my teeth?
well bleaching works well for whitening, but veneers would fix the crooked ones and whiten, they are expensive and insurance does not cover them.
Reply:I would go with veneers. You may also want to ask the dentist about bonding, I chipped a tooth once and my dentist used bonding to fi it cosmetically. If you can do that, you don't have to wait, the dentist can do it in the same visit.
Reply:just buy a platinum or gold grill man thats what is hot in the streets
Reply:I have actually been considering this also and through what I have found, as well as from my dentist, veneers are the way to go. There is relatively no pain, you don't even need a numbing agent. They also do not have to "file down" or alter your personal teeth in order to place the veneers. They are also very thin, yet strong. And cost wise they are much, much cheaper then any of the other cosmetic options I have looked at, including crowns.

Hope that helps some. And good luck!
Reply:why dont you go to the dentist and talk to him...there is something called cosmetic dentistry. They will expalin everything to you with the cost.
Reply:The best way to go- is to ask your dentist to X-ray your teeth and be open to a professional suggestion/and consider your options.
Reply:veneers are a hell of a lot cheaper than crowns.
Reply:My lower front-4 were slightly crooked too.

As they became in need of crowns, my dentist designed the front-4 as a straight set, fitting perfectly together and with my upper bite.

I am so pleased.

Can my friend remove his dental crowns?

I do not like my dental crowns because they are too white and straight. It looks like false teeth.

How can my friend remove his dental crowns? Is there any complications?

Can my friend remove his dental crowns?
Yes. If it is that bad and noticible then he should go bach to the dentist and have him correct the problem, if he removes them he is doing more harm than good.
Reply:I suppose he could; but it might be better if a dentist did it. j/k
Reply:Make sure that the crown is not the temporary one. The temporary one is solid, while the permanent has the teeth shape.

Don't pull it . It will bleed quite a bit and chances are it won't come off . A dentist should do the work.
Reply:crowns are false teeth, in a way. don't pull them out. if it doesn't match the other teeth, then you should have told the dentist. you pay a lot for them, just whiten the other teeth.
Reply:Well, do you mean can he have his dentist? The dentist grinds the tooth down to, well, pretty much a stub..They will need to do a new fitting or temps til they design a new set for him..

Tooth crowns - did you ever have problems with pain/headaches immediately after having a tooth crowned?

I had two of my bottom side teeth crowned two days ago. For the past two days after chewing during the day, I get an awful headache and my crowned teeth feel sensitive. Is that normal?

Tooth crowns - did you ever have problems with pain/headaches immediately after having a tooth crowned?
It can be that the crown is high or has a high spot that must be ground down this is the main cause of pain and headaches.

well apparantly i have a triple crown, hate my hair, so damn annoying, i usually get it just cut short with scissors, around a 5 or 6 in length but can go down to 4.it's not too bad, hate to think what i'd be like bald, not a pretty site i imagine.

Should i get porcelain veneers or crowns?

2 of my front teeth are stained by drinking alot of tea/coffee and another front 2 are stained due to medication when i was younger. 2 are a greyish colour and the other two are yellow spots in the centre of my teeth. Which would be more appropriate and effective? veneers or crowns?

Should i get porcelain veneers or crowns?
I think Veneers according to what you're saying. A crown could be for teeth or molars that are really damaged by cavities or broken. I had one big cavity on one of my lower molars, but it lasted for 7 years! Then it started hurting again! that's when I had the crown and entire molar removed permanently!

But you should always consult a physician for any infections , then go see your Dentist! Good Luck!
Reply:I have porcelain veneers (6 to be exact) and I love them. Literally unbreakable, and there are SOOO many shades that no one will notice compared to your other teeth.
Reply:crowns last longer but veneers are less expensive, otherwise it's just cosmetics so the choice is yours.
Reply:CROWNS!!! they make you look like a pirate ;D only kidding, i prefer porcelain veneers.
Reply:veneers!!!

Reply:a bridge typically cost around 1,000$ per unit. which means if you have a missing tooth the dentist would need to "bridge the gap". so two units for anchors and one unit for the gap(3000). think of the missing tooth as a body of water. in order to get from one side to the other you have to place an anchor on each side and connect it in themiddle. one of the reasons a bridge is important is because teeth will grow forward/upward/downward until they find another tooth to connect with. if you are missing a tooth, then the tooth above the missing area will grow down/up/forward until it is toucing something. sometimes that means you may lose the tooth above the space as well. you might want to ask your dentist about an implant. this is the better option, because you will not need to drill on teeth that maynot need it. an implant will typically cost what the bridge cost (3000) but is worth because the teeth on either side of the space will not have to be worked on. plus it is easier to keep clean. Good Luck!

Does your child have crowns to repair bottle mouth tooth decay or nursing bottle syndrome? How do they look?

My 3 year old has to have over $4000 worth of dental work next week. She will have all 8 of her front teeth capped with prefab stainless steel crowns with resin windows. I wanted to know how these caps look when they are in place. They are white (tooth colored) on the front and silver on the back. Is the silver visible? Can you provide any photos to me?

Hi there.

I was a pediatric dental assistant for years.....used to do these procedures for little ones everyday.

You may see the silver depending on your child's arch. If the child is a thumb sucker or a tongue thruster the gate of the jaws is more open and the silver will be more visible. However, it's not so noticeable that your lil one will be ghastly to look at.

I am assuming a pediatric dentist is performing the work for you at the hospital under anesthesia? The dentist I worked for would take even more time with the lil ones when we had them in a surgical op at the hospital. This way he would make sure that the lil ones had the perfect smile.

Rest assured you are doing the best thing for your child and your pediatric dentist will provide the best care!

Good luck and take care!
Reply:okay dont laugh this is kinda personal but whatever well i had the same problem except my mom was 20 so she was young and tried to take care of me ... well i had my front teeth like that ... practicaly half my mouth (i guess you could say i had grillz) well i turned out fine my teeth are great... of course your daughters teeth will fall out so dont worry about embarissment and at least they wont be wrecked in the future

Reply:My son had the same thing but he got caps his entire mouth was pretty much silver. It didnt look bad. Im sure the silver will be visible if she opens her mouth to wide. But who cares she's 3.

Can these words be found in the Bible? Or were they just created by Casting Crowns?

These lyrics are from Casting Crown's "Set Me Free" song, when Jesus is talking:

-Do you want to be free?

Lift your chains

I hold the key

All power on Heav'n and Earth belong to Me-

I'm looking for a verse where Jesus says something along those lines. Any help? Thanks to anyone who answers!

Can these words be found in the Bible? Or were they just created by Casting Crowns?
maybe around wherever he says "the truth shall set you free?" but i don't know where that part is either
Reply:paraphrases of Biblical texts:

"Do you want to be free" idea appears in many different places in the Bible:

When Jesus took up the scroll in the temple and read from the words of the prophet Isaiah (Luke 4:17-21), He read this far:

The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor;he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted,to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind,to set at liberty them that are bruised,to preach the acceptable year of the Lord. Isaiah 61: 1-2a

Then He closed the book, returned it to the minister, and sat down. All eyes were upon Him, and He told them,

This day is THIS scripture fulfilled in your ears.

Isaiah 61:1

The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, Because the LORD has anointed me To bring good news to the afflicted; He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to captives And freedom to prisoners;

18"The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, 19 to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor Luke 4:18-19

"I hold the key:" could refer to "hold captivity captive," part of a Messianic prophecy.

And --"All power on heaven and earth belong to me" might have been taken from Revelations: "Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, wisdom, riches and strength," OR perhaps from the Psalms: "The Earth is the Lord's and the fullness thereof."

And here in Christ's own words is where he says that he has been given all authority :

Reply:John 8:31,32; ' ... So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, “ If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.'

Matthew 28:18; ' ,,, and Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “ All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.'

Ephesians 1:20,21; ' ... which He brought about in Christ, when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come.
Reply:You have to narrow it down. From this point all I could say is 'read the Bible', but you already have that bit.

"I am the way, and the truth, and the life."

"The wages of sin is death."

"All authority has been given to me."

"He who believes these sayings of mine, and DOES (e.a.) them..."

Reply:It is a parallelism of some words Jesus said, and some ideas made from some other words Jesus said.

The four Gospels in the New Testament will bring you to the words and teachings that parallel the song.

Reply:They were made up, but Jesus said lay down your burdens, and he says he holds all the power or something like that. Sorry, I always mess up quotes.
Reply:It is a weak paraphrase with artistic license
Reply:Revelation 1:18

I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.

Try reading all of Revelation, chapter one.

I have a pile of 25p coins or 'crowns'. Would a bank accept them to put into an account?

I've got a load of 25p coins or 'crowns'. I was thinking of taking them to a bank to get them put into my savings account.

Does anyone know if banks would take them and do that?

My bank is Bradford and Bingley.

It depends on how old they are. If they are pre-decimal crowns, then no, they are not legal tender. HOWEVER the good news is, if they are in good condition and not too worn you could probably sell them to a coin dealer or even take up coin collecting yourself and you'd make much more than 25p per coin!

It does require a little research though.

Here's an article from ebay:

http://reviews.ebay.co.uk/A-Guide-To-Col...

Generally speaking, you could probably make a few quid at least on the not-so-rare ones. i have a crown that is currently worth £40 or so...but there weren't many of them made which bumps up the value.

Ebay is good to tell you what the demand is like, but generally you're much better off talking to a coin dealer or a Numismatist.

Hey, you could always send them to me ;)

Does anyone in Maryland know of a dental school in the area that does implants post, abutments and crowns?

I am going to have a lot of money soon, but still not enough for me to pay 3-5g's a tooth and I need 5-6 implants. I would really appreciate anyone who knows of any dental school that can help me in the state of Maryland? That will provide the whole implant procedure? I was told they have reduced rates for this.

Can someone give me a telephone# or email address where I can speak with the school or any information, please?

How long do dental crowns last for?

So i think im meant to be getting my teeth crowned, but im a bit confused.. How long do they last or how long do you have them for and when there time is up what happens next?!

How long do dental crowns last for?
Well, your dental insurance company will usually pay for a crown to be replaced every 5 years. But, most crowns last much longer than that. I'd say at least 7 to 10 years, but I've seen some that have lasted 20+ years. If the crown ever comes off, it can usually be re-cemented to the tooth. If a crown fails or becomes damaged in the future, it can most likely be replaced with a new crown as long as there is enough tooth structure left to support one.

If you are confused as to what dental work you are having done, you need to call the dental office and clarify the actual procedure. They should explain all of these things to you before you have the work completed.
Reply:I have had 2 permanent crowns done. One lasted for about 10 years and the other has been in for about 6 years. The dentist told me that if I brush and floss regularly (2X a day) that they could last forever. They need to last as long as possible because it is a replacement tooth. The crown I lost was on an upper tooth and it cracked below the gum line. They had to do an extraction - so now I will either need a bridge or an implant in the spot. Leaning towards the implant.

I am not sure why you need crowns - but if it is because of root canals, it's a good idea to get them done because the rootless tooth will eventually get brittle and may crack or need to be pulled.
Reply:Crowns can last 20-30 years. You will need a crown on that tooth for the rest of your life, so at some point dont be suprised to need a new one. When a crown falls off or decay is present, most times you can put it back on, get a new crown, or last resort extraction.
Reply:Properly fitted crowns should last ten years or more, if fitted correctly by a [competent] dentist.
Reply:As long as the root of the real remains of tooth lasts
Reply:well i've got crowns on my teeth...some of them have been there 20 years %26amp; are still fine!

Do porcelain crowns stain from coffee and tobacco? Can they be whitened using over the counter products?

What products do you recommend and which ones should be avoided at all costs? Thanks for taking time to answer.

Do porcelain crowns stain from coffee and tobacco? Can they be whitened using over the counter products?
Porcelain crowns do not stain with coffee or tobacco!!! Tooth colored fillings (composites) can stain because they are porous. I think people are confusing the two. Porcelain crowns are not porous and are furnaced (baked) at a high temperature and absolutely will not change color. The margin near the edge which is natural tooth may stain from coffee etc, but the truth is that is such a small margin, it normally isn't noticeable. Porcelain crowns are a a pre-determined color when they are placed (the doctor chooses a shade to match your natural teeth) and the color cannot be changed unless you have them replaced. If the margin around the crown is stained, you should have a professional cleaning (prophylaxis) with your dentist. They will simple polish stain. In an extreme circumstance, a porcelain crown may pick up some coffee stain along with plaque on the tooth, but it would mean not brushing your teeth at all so the surface of the crown is rough enough to have the stain adhere to it. But that is extreme and I have never seen it. I have seen stain on posterior gold crowns, but never on procelain. Even if this did happen, it would not change the color of the crown, it would only be on the outside of the crown and could be polished off by a dentist.

PLEASE do not use vinegar or other acid to try to clean your crowns. That could irritate your soft tissue (gums)
Reply:yes they stain and vinegar is also a good stain remover.
Reply:Yes they do stain, and any toothpaste will work if it has stain removers on the tube.
Reply:I have crowns and yes, they yellow. I use Crest whitener and it works on both porcelain and enamel.
Reply:I have 5 porcelain crowns and haven't noticed any yellowing. I don't smoke or drink coffee, but I do drink hot tea. I've never tried whitening products, but I've read that porcelain crowns cannot be whitened.
Reply:One inexpensive product that works on most stains is baking soda. If that doesn't work, read the label of the cleaning products that are used for such stains. If they say not be used on......, than find one that does. If you can't find any over the counter cleaners, I can tell you what works on everything which is the world's most versatile organic cleaner. Please e mail me for more info. Because of yahoo's policy it cannot be disclosed here. thanks
Reply:Yes to both questions. Baking soda is a good stain remover, too.

What is the difference between the OLD dental Crowns that have been used and the new glass crowns? (procera)?

I am trying to figure out the difference-- and what makes them better to have. There are all these new glass crowns on the market and what makes them so much better-- actually what makes the Old crowns not a durable?

What is the difference between the OLD dental Crowns that have been used and the new glass crowns? (procera)?
The Procera crowns are not made out of glass, it is all porcelain. I think what you mean by older crowns, are the Porcelain fused to metal (PFM). They still have porcelain on them but underneath that is a metal substructure %26amp; this is why they are more durable. I ALWAYS recommend a PFM crown on patients second molars (the very last tooth in your mouth). But on any other tooth, you can use the all porcealin ones. You definetly need the all porcealin on front teeth, because they look much more natural %26amp; PFM crowns will cause a gray line next to the gumline, which you wouldn't want in your smile. Hope this answers your questions. Good luck!
