Money is tight and I don't need a more expensive crown for a tooth that won't be seen anyway.
What are my options in crowns and their relative expense?
I would agree with the dentist! A full-gold crown is your best bet. They fit more accurately and they are better for your opposing teeth.

Most dentists charge about the same thing for most types of crowns. If you don't care what it looks like, get a full coverage gold crown. They are proven to have the best margins and the best biocompatibility.
