What exactly is a crown, and my dentist tell me that it doesn't feel, the surgery, much different than a cavity. is this true, or does it hurt like heck???
Crowns?????
I got a crown a few months ago, and it truly did not hurt any worse than a cavity. I was skeptical, but it's true. I took Advil the day of the crown and the day after because my mouth was a little sore, but that was it. You'll be fine.
Reply:Essentially a crown is a cap for the tooth. It surround the tooh and keeps splitting forces from fracturing off cusps when there has been decay and a loss of healthy tooth structure. It should feelthe same as a cavity, though the preparation and drilling is a little more extensive. Basically, the tooth is reduced in every dimension, and an impression is taken to be sent to a lab where they make the cap fit perfectly for your tooth. Your dentist will then have you back to adjust the crown in your mouth and then cement it. Here's a link to a picture showing the reduction of the tooth.

Either way, this procedure shouldn't hurt, your dentist will give you anesthetic. You may have some post op soreness though in your gums from the impression process.
Reply:Hi, I'm a dentist.
A crown is a single-tooth restoration that completely covers the "crown" of the tooth (the part of the tooth visible above the gum line). Crowns can be fabricated from many different materials, including full porcelain, porcelain fused to a metal substructure, and full gold.
Having a tooth prepared for a crown should not be much different to the patient than having a filling prepared. It will likely take a little longer for the crown, however.
It shouldn't hurt at all, as you will be numb.
Good luck.
