Is it worth spending a lot more on private dental crowns rather than NHS ones?

: I need two crowns replaced. My dentist has recommended I spend nearly £800 on two private crowns rather than £195 on the NHS ones. As far as I understand, the private ones and the NHS ones would both be metal and porcelain, but made at different laboratories. He said that the private one would be better quality. I'm happy to spend the money if it's worth it, but I'd rather have a holiday! Can the difference really be that much?

Ah, the joys of social medicine. It seems that all is not free and great. You really do get what you pay for.

Ask your doc what the difference is. Appearance, durability or both? The private crowns better be far and above tops on both counts for that kind of cash. You might consider the cheaper now, take the vacation, and start saving for new crowns in a year or three.
