Reply:Most dental labs still charge the same even if there are multiple units. We haven't made a Lava crown in my office in so long, I don't remember what the lab fee is, around $200.00 I am guessing.
However, you do realize that the $4200.00 he quoted you is not actually just the cost of the crowns themselves, right???
That includes everything necessary to do the work for you:
anesthetic
guaze
instrument sterilization
anything disposable
burs (Drill bits)
impression material
lab fee
temporary material
cement
assistants pay
electricity
water
front desk's salary (who works with you)
paper your reciept is printed on (and ink)
rent on the building
Trust me, the list goes on and on and on.
You ever gone to a nice restuarant and wondered "Why the heck does a steak dinner cost $20.00?" You don't really think the food actually costs $20.00, do you?
So what it actually costs the dentist, is going to depend on what materials he uses, what his overhead costs are, how much he pays his staff, what lab he uses, etc. etc. etc.
I personally think his fee is pretty average for the dental field. But you might ask him about a pre-payment discount or something like that. Some offices offer that.

How much does it cost to whiten crowns?
I just got a new crown TODAY and when I came home and looked in the mirror, I realized that the crown was way off color. The dentist stained it too much to match the color of my teeth. Can I go back and have him fix this at no extra cost?

Ummm... It sounds like the dentist didn't like the color either. He (she) wanted to send the crown back to the lab to get the shade corrected, but you didn't want to wait and signed your approval. I think the dentist would still like to fix this, because we don't want people going around unhappy. We especially don't want people going around with ugly crowns saying, "Look what my crummy dentist did to me!" There is only one problem. Since you said that you did not want to have the color fixed, the crown might be cemented with a cement that is very hard to remove without risking damage to your tooth or the crown. If the dentist can get it off without damage (We know how...), you might luck out and still get it fixed for free. If the crown has to be cut apart to minimize the risk of breaking your tooth, you should expect to pay an additional fee for the correction. It probably won't be as much as the original crown, but understand that now, instead of just "fixing the color," the dentist will have to have a whole new crown made and this is going to take almost as much time as the first one and the lab will charge just as much money. With any luck, maybe the dentist knew in his heart that you WOULD change your mind and so he used one of the "softer" cements instead of the "space age, industrial strength" adhesives we have available today.

The dentist should want to make it right, but the only way to change it is to make a new crown and remove the old one. They have to drill off the old one and there is always a risk of extra trauma to the tooth with this.
Go back and address your concerns to the dentist and you can work together to come to a solution.

Permanent cements usually last a very very long time unless the fitting is wrong or it wasn't bonded correctly then theres a small chance it could come out. Temporary cements hence the name do last a short time that's why u need to go back to your dentist 2 weeks after the preparation of the crown so you can get the permanent one.

How do I know which colour, size and shape to choose for my new Crowns?
I had my 2 front teeth knocked out over 15years ago and the crowns fitted at the time are now looking and feeling less like I would like them too. So I am now of an age where I feel brave enough to go get some new ones put in and I am going to the dentist next week to discuss what size shape and colour I would like, but how will I know what is best for me this is my greatest fear that I choose the wrong type, how can I visualize what would suit me best. At the moment they are slightly yellow and they are what I would say are short and dumpy teeth. I also have a couple of mm gap between them but don't want to widen them further as they are already quite wide. Is there a website I could go on and pay and try different types out like you can with a hair style? Any help with this would be received with great thanks.

The lab can then fabricate study models of your mouth-meaning that before any major work is done in your mouth, they can show you wax examples of the crowns they will make for you---so you can preview what the size and shape of them will look like in relation to your other teeth--as to the color--some offices have a special camera for matching the shades of your other teeth-if your dentist doesn't have one-you can usually go to the lab and they will match your shade.(Keep in mind that if you are planning on bleaching your teeth, you will want to do this before they take the shade for your new crowns because crowns will not bleach)
Reply:ok, the shape should be no longer than 1mm to your lateral incisors (the teeth next to your front teeth)... most of this your dentist will determine for your... the color, should match that of the surrounding teeth, as to appear as natural as possible. if you want to whiten your teeth, i suggest whitening them NOW, before you get your new crowns. otherwise, your new crowns will look yellowed next to your newly whitened teeth, and crowns can't be bleached only remade to match the surrounding teeth. as far as teeth, there are only so many variences you can go with... you need to stick with what fits the anatomy of your mouth. the teeth function, is more important than the appearance. what's more important? a porche that doesn't run, or a kia that will never break down? same with teeth...talk with your dentist (no there isn't any website that i know of that can help you virtually 'try on' teeth), and s/he will help you decide which is the best option for your situation. but like i said, if you want your teeth whiter, bleach them now (with crest white strips), before your appointment, ok? otherwise you'll just have multicolored teeth :o)

If the shade of your natural teeth aren't what you like, you can bleach your teeth in advance of getting the new crowns. The dentist are professionals and will adjust the size of the surrounding teeth with a composite bonding or a veneer to increase their size if needed. He's there to help you attain the smile you want. Think of it like this, his reputation is walking out the door in your mouth and he wants it to be one that pleases you and any one that sees your teeth when you smile. He won't let you make a bad choice. You will be able to look at them before they are cemented into place and any changes that you deem necessary can be adjusted prior to the placement. Don't worry, he/she will make you look gorgeous! You'll wonder why you didn't do this years ago. Good luck!

I'm going to assume that you were in your teens then, so your bone structure wasn't finish growing and your teeth were still erupting after having these crowns placed. Now 15 years later your through with growing and it's time to replace them. Didn't have time to add this earlier but felt it was relevant to the information you needed. Additional information: I don't know of any web sites that allow you to view changes as in hair styles. Your dentist will be able to show you diagrams and perhaps photo's of prior patients he's taken with similar problems and their finished results. Trust the dentist, everytime you smile and show your teeth to the public you are his walking advertisement! Good luck!

I don't understand what you mean by what happens...for the fillings the dentist will numb you and drill out the decay and put filling material in place of the decay. For the crowns he will also numb you and then prepare the tooth to make sure a crown will fit over it, then he will take an impression(mold) of your mouth and send it to a lab where they will make your crown. He will also make you a temporary crown to get you by till the permanent crown arrives.
Reply:okay lets make things clear here, novocaine is an old term for anesthesia. nowadays they use the an anesthesia that is called lidocaine which almost similar to that. lidocaine is a drug that has a vasconstrictor that if it was given to you thru shot it makes the area numb for a couple of hours. with the other questions your asking about what happens if you have fillings or crowns done in your teeth, well what happens is that your tooth or teeth will be restored and it will be benificial to you because you can use these teeth for more long time vs of not restoring it thru filling or crown.. good luck with your appointment and take care

Then once you are numb he will start to drill out the decay or cavity then once he has drilled to soild tooth structure he will place a filling either silver/amalgam or composite (white). What that does it basically gives you new tooth structure and prevents further decay on your tooth, With a crown the dr will drill and grind off all decayed tooth structure and take a couple molds of you tooth. The first mold is done before any drilling has begun this will be the mold the assistant or dr uses to make the temporary crown. The temporary is the tooth you will have in your mouth for about 2 weeks until the crown is completed in the lab. Then after the drilling the dr takes another mold or impression which is sent to the lab to make a mold to format the crown. In two weeks you will go back to the dentist and the temporary will be removed and your permanant crown wil be replaced. I hope you chose a porcelin fused to gold or all porcelin crown the crowns that contain metal can irritate the gum tissue. The dr should have explained this to you before hand too. Its not too late to change your mind you can let them know atyour appointment. Basically relax if you have a good dr your experience shouldnt be bad. Bring a magazine or if you have a portable game system like a gameboy or psp bring that to. Depending on what you have done filling appts take about 30-50 minutes and a crown can take anywhere from 1 to 2 hours.

I would agree with the dentist! A full-gold crown is your best bet. They fit more accurately and they are better for your opposing teeth.
